I've been matched!

No, not that kind of match. I've been matched with my mentee! I mentioned a while ago how I signed up to be a part of the iMentor program - but now everything is starting! I am mixed with feelings of excitement and nervousness. On one hand, I get to help a youth but on the other hand, she may not even want my help. It's going to be a tough road ahead, but I am ready for the challenge. I get to meet her either this week or next week at an event held at her school. I hope she's in Brooklyn. Wish me luck!

PS. They are always looking for more mentors. Especially boys. So sign up now!

I'm an iMentor! (well, I will be soon)

Last night I had my training to become one of NY's finest, an iMentor. It is this amazing program that pairs NY professionals with high school students from some of the underprivileged and at risk high schools throughout the city. Each mentor is paired with their mentee for the school year (some even for their whole high school experience). I am so excited to be a part of some teen's life and offer encouragement and support. They told us an absolutely scary statistic last night, only 55% of New York City youths graduate from high school. But, high schoolers involved in the iMentor program have a 93% graduation rate! I can't believe how drastic a chage that is. I have to help. I am just waiting for the FBI to check my finger prints.

They are constantly looking for mentors, so check out the site and sign up. Help a teen reach their dreams.

I made some goals

So, I have been doing a lot of thinking lately about what I want from life and have made a few goals for myself to get me closer. Posting them makes it more likely for me to make progress towards attaining them.
  • Learn French. This is for two reasons. 1. I have always wanted to learn the language and 2. so I can move to Paris (which is hopefully a not so far fetched goal of mine).
  • Get 1000 page views on my blog in one day. I have a long way to go. Do that many people even care what I have to say? I guess we'll find out.
  • Make progress on the book ideas I have. The ultimate goal here is to get one published. I need to set aside time each week to work on this. Make a conscious effort.
  • Make time for myself, and not feel guilty about it.
  • Create a successful etsy shop.
  • Become an iMentor. I want to help someone and I think this is a way I would be good at that in NY.
  • Try a new recipe each week. I was doing really good at this one for a while, but I have slacked off.
  • Learn a way to express myself creatively. I like to try a lot of different things but I need to find one that works for me.
Now, if I just didn't have to sleep every day these goals would be a lot easier to complete. Looks like there is a lot of coffee in my future.
